Until a few months ago, when the gold shield appearedin the Notification Area, I would Start/Windows Update, the pagewould open, I would get the 'Checking to see if your computer.' message and all would proceed properly. Now, when I do this, theprogress bar for 'Opening Page.' Freezes aboutone third of the way across. Occasionally, after a long wait, it willopen, I receive the 'Checking to see.'
Message, and then a blankwindow, which remains that way. Meanwhile, there is no activityshowing in the double-monitor icon in the Notification Area. To getaround this, I have been clicking the gold shield to get the updatedetails, then clicking download, followed by install when it hasfinished.

Today, I selected download and then tried to bring up theprogress window, but nothing happened and the gold shield disappeared. There certainly wasn`t sufficient time for the whole package to havedownloaded and installed and there was no activity showing in theNotification Area. I tried re-booting, but the gold shield has notre-appeared.I have not made any changes to firewall settings, nor to browseroptions, and hope that someone can explain how to resolve thisproblem, please. Many thanksKateKate12.08.09 10:45. Bennett Marco: Thank you for crossposting for me; I did not realisethat there was a dedicated NG for this subject.Andrew E: the address you mentioned is the page which hangs and willnot open, unfortunately.db: all services started and automatic. Re: anti-virus software -no changes were made to my settings before I started having thisproblem, and I do not have any third-party firewall software - justthe physical firewall of my router. Again, no changes have been madeto its settings.BTW, I do not get any error message/s. I have looked online for asolution, but couldn`t find anything that was wholly relevant.
Oh,and the Windows Update folder in /Programs is empty, if that makes anydifference.ThanksKate'Bennett Marco' wrote in messagenews:gdt585t1q8ndn9kqqg2ik4j1qj8b4vdvuq@4ax.com.Kate12.08.09 11:06. Thread history:.Curiously, when I went to restart in safe mode, there was a message to say that downloads were available to install and this would be done automatically if I shut down the computer. That tells us that Automatic Updates (AU) is working. You'll only see AU's 'Updates are ready to be installed' icon when all ofthe updates you've approved have downloaded. When a large number of updates are released on a given Patch Tuesday, youmay encounter an 'Install updates and turn off computer' button when you goto shutdown.
Using it will install the already-downloaded updates butthere's no way of knowing which updates you're installing.Absent any serious numerical Errors in your windowsupdate.log (cf.), you may be seeing a delay caused byexcessive demand on the servers ('Update is not allowed to download due toregulation'). It can take up to 7 days or more (sometimes much more) forall Automatic Update users to get new updates when so many have beenreleased on the second Tuesday of a given month. For the issue with the Update icon appearing in the Notification Areaand then disappearing after you Appove the download of updates.there's a bug in the updating mechanism if Automatic Updates is set toanything but it's Default setting, Auotmatic (recommended). What's happening is that after you Approve the download of.all. theupdates the ones that are not.regulated. are downloaded to the system. The non-regulated updates are Security updates. Then the update icondisappears and you are not prompted to install them. But, if you click Start Turn off Computer, you will notice that theTurn Off icon now has an icon overlay on it and this text is at thebottom of the window' Click Turn Off to install important updates and turn off yourcomputer.
Click here to turn off without installing updates 'The last sentence is a link to turn off and not install the updatesdownloaded. Firstly, thanks for all the replies and suggestions. As I mentioned before, I have run the Fixit, but not in Aggressivemode.Re Automatic Updates, I have that set to Notify Me but do not downloadand install: I like to see what is being loaded into my computer -even if I am not sure what it does! To that end, when the shieldappears, I have always gone to Start/Windows Update and connected thatway.
Incidentally, the Target details in Properties for this link arecorrect as stated by MowGreen in another thread inmicrosoft.public.windowsupdate. Since the difficulties withconnecting to the webpage started, I have clicked the shield icon anddownloaded and installed that way, and that does seem to work.Because of that, I do not think that it can be high traffic which isblocking my access. Also, having been able to connect in Safe mode, leads me to think that there is some conflict in my computer. However, I have disabled my anti-virus software (AVG 8.5 Free) andtried to connect, but no luck. As I have said, I do not have anyfirewall software apart from Windows. I have run an Ad-Aware deepscan, but nothing was reported. I have read lots of articles both onMS Support and elsewhere trying to find a solution but haven`t foundone yet.Yesterday, I did manage to reach the webpage.
The site checked that Ihad the right ActiveX software, and then checked for updates. Theprogress bar (green scrolling thingy) just kept working and workingbutnothing appeared - not even the message to say that there were no newupdates available. I saved a copy of the WindowsUpdate.log for therelevant attempt, the last few lines of which read '80072ee2 WindowsUpdate FailureSoftware Synchronization Windows Update Client failed todetect with error 0x80072ee2.' I have searched this error code and run MS`s Article ID: 836941troubleshooting suggestions, but am still getting the same problem. It looks as though I shall probably have to live with it, and hopethat it clears itself eventually. Maybe it is time to try the Fixitin Aggressive mode (I shall set a System Restore Point first!).Thanks again for all the advice.Kate'MowGreen' wrote in messagenews:eyMp3eHHKHA.6068@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl.Kate14.08.09 7:36.
